Finding water leaks in drains using vapor and smoke
Whilst finding a leak in a water installation is possible with acoustic equipment or tracer gas; the process of finding a leak in a waste water system is not as easy.
Both of these techniques use the fact that the water installation is under pressure or that it has the capacity to hold pressure, but waste water systems are not pressurized.
Very often, the one end of the waste water system terminates in the main sewer, and it is therefore not possible to contain gas inside the pipe so that it exposes the leak.
When we encounter a problem of this nature, we make use of a specialized tool which generates either glycerin smoke or hydrogen and nitrogen vapor.
Whilst each situation is unique, the general idea is that we introduce the vapor into the pipe from a waste fitting and then observe the location of the leak either visually or with the assistance of a sensor made to trace only that specific element.
The advantage to this method is that we are able to test pipes ranging from 50mm to 2000mm diameter that are located to a depth of up to two meters under ground.
Clients that would have had to demolish the entire facade of their building in order to locate a leak on a common waste stack can simply conduct a simple and fast test to eliminate specific lines and locate the leak to within a few centimetres from the source of the leak.
