Finding water leaks using acoustic leak detection
When a pressurized pipe looses integrity and water leaks from the hole or crack in the pipe, the friction of the water against the pipe makes a sound which can sometimes be heard with a human ear.
This however is seldom the case since the majority of these leaks make a sound that is far beyond our hearing capability.
Sound waves in water have the ability to travel quite far, and are easy to detect with specialized equipment. The sound frequency will travel along the length of the pipe and since the sound closer to the leak will be “louder” than the sound further away from the leak, we have the ability to locate the leak quite easily with a digital sensor.
